New Mekajinn material...
14 October 2010

Mekajinn
It was a bleak October’s morning… the sky was grey… greyer than John Major if he’d washed himself with a pair of new black jeans on a 60 degree cycle.

Luckily I was indoors with Mekajinn, warm, cosy and with a lovely cup of tea… interview first and then a nice bit of scran… let the drama unfold!

So, tell us a little about Mekajinn… is that your real name? It’s a bit of a strange thing to call your children if you don’t mind me saying… and what does it mean?!

“Ah, Mekajinn! Nah, that’s not my real name… my real name is Jim… or ‘The Jim’ to some people. I took it from a couple of places. ‘Meka’ comes from the classic Japanese documentary ‘Godzilla Vs. Mekagodzilla. Mekagodzilla was a mechanical robot Godzilla, and I quite liked the Meka bit. Jinn is another word for Genie… I think it’s Persian in origin, so I guess it’s like something you find in a bottle from those Sinbad films.”

So a kind of Mechanical Robot Genie?

“That’s the one Squire.”

So how long have you been doing electronic music then?

“Well I guess I started in about 1995 with an old associate of mine, using an Atari ST running Cubase 2.0. After that I set my own rig up in about 1998, and I’ve never looked back. It’s all pretty geeky involving such phrases as nRPN, Sysex and even Iterative Quantise, but I enjoy it… plus it makes weird noises!”

Cool, cool… so what do you get up to away from the music then?

“I play a bit of PS3… usually beating my bro online at football, poor lad. He needs to learn to tackle better! Other than that I like a bit of cookery… a good movie maybe… photography. Oh, and I do enjoy a bit of real footy too!”

I see, so, going back to the music, what sort of stuff have you been up to recently?

Mekajinn

“Well, there’s a large group of tunes I have been working on for the last two years or so, and I am starting to cobble some of them together into some sort of finished shape now, so hopefully there should be a CD’s worth by the end of the year.”

Any chance of a preview?

“Aha! Wait and see young fellow-me-lad! Actually yes… I have 2 or 3 almost ready to go, so watch this space.”

What kind of style can we expect?

“It’s the usual pay-no-attention-to-style type stuff actually. Some techno, some vaguely ambient electronica… some of it’s almost hip hip. But I refuse to MC, I wouldn’t want someone to ‘pop a cap in my ass’… whatever that may mean!”

Excellent. So have you got anything else to tell us Meka?

“Yeah, it’s time for some luncheon… fancy beans on toast?”

Sure do…

And so concluded my exclusive Mekajinn interview. The convo was good… the beans on toast were better!

Tune in next time for more exclusive showbiz star celeb goss and culinary culture to make those celeb chefs weep!

Over and out!
